iFixit's teardown of Apple's first folding iPhone, the iPhone Duo, shows a device that handles dust intrusion better than rival foldables while still carrying real repair trade-offs. The analysis highlights an easily serviceable battery and outer display alongside a hinge mechanism that remains vulnerable to grit and stress-related screen failures.
Dust Resistance Holds Up, Mostly
Despite its IP68 rating, the iPhone Duo wasn't immune to contamination during iFixit's dust test. Particles collected in the USB-C port, speaker mesh, and bezel, but largely stayed out of critical internal components. The hinge was the weak point: dust worked its way in and produced an audible crunch, a condition iFixit warns could eventually damage the screen. Even so, the phone outperformed the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold under the same test conditions. Separately, YouTuber JerryRigEverything found that dust in the hinge area can interfere with the magnets that keep the device closed. iFixit's practical advice: avoid sandy environments.
Battery and Display Access Praised
iFixit singled out the battery removal process as the easiest it has seen in any foldable phone, crediting Apple's electrical-release adhesive technology, first introduced with the iPhone 16, which loosens with a mild electric current rather than requiring solvents or prying. The outer display is also simple to access, which matters because many internal repairs route through it. Reaching the internal screen takes more effort, requiring heat to soften adhesive, but remains achievable. Apple also designed the nano-texture cover layer to peel off for replacement, priced at $19 with AppleCare+ or $49 without it.
Unstacked Logic Board and Hinge Stress Points
Under the hood, iFixit documented a 10-layer stacked display and, notably, an unstacked logic board - the first in an iPhone since the iPhone 8 - which helps keep the folded device slim. A 3D model of the hinge built by iFixit revealed stress concentrations around the flex cable, with curved rails that may lift away from supporting plates if the retraction mechanism falters. iFixit links these structural transitions to the kind of display failures users have reported, including trapped particles, repeated folding fatigue, and manufacturing defects.
Repairability Score: Ahead of Rivals, Still Limited
The iPhone Duo earned a provisional 5 out of 10 on iFixit's repairability scale, edging out the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, which both scored 4. The battery and outer display repairs are genuine strengths, but the hinge assembly and internal screen complexity keep the overall score moderate rather than high. iFixit's full teardown video and blog post offer a closer look at the mechanisms behind these findings.
